Hello Lovely Cottagers!

It’s almost time for our annual anti-valentine show in aid of BHF for Heart Awareness month!

An awesome smorgasbord of talented acts from International, TV, Circuit legends alongside stars of the future all await you at our new temporary pop-up venue in the Belfry Shopping Centre – which has been described by comedians last month as having and ‘Edinburgh fringe vibe’

This month another Cottage fave headlines:

CHRISTIAN REILLY (@christreilly)
Musical Comedy
Perrier/Chortle Award winning international musical Comedian.

Christian first moved into the world of comedy as Otis Lee Crenshaw’s [Rich Hall] guitar-wielding sidekick – a job which took him from Nottingham to Nashville, Tennessee. Now an international comedian playing all the major comedy venues, Christian blends stand-up with dynamic guitar/vocal abilities to relate his unique experience with a sharp wit, youthful energy and effortless charm – with the occasional snipe at histrionic rock bands, musical theatre and morose indie musicians.

He has written for and appeared on two series of ’That Was Then This Is Now’
(BBC Radio 2) as musical counterpart to Richard Herring and Emma Kennedy as well as giving his improvisation skills a regular outing on Rowland Rivron’s ’Jammin’ (BBC Radio 2) with Kim Wilde and Hazel O’ Connor

‘If you’re a fan of Bill Bailey or Rich Hall, you’re a fan already’ (Guardian).

“His stand-up is witty and heaving with punchlines…will win over all but the hardest hearts and minds” (Chortle)

Supporting Christian:

GARY SANSOME (@garysansome)
Gary Sansome is a world travelled, award winning Scottish comedian. A veteran of the Edinburgh Fringe – Gary has performed all across the globe from Broadway in New York to Shanghai in China.

“pure entertainment and hilarity” (Bunbury Magazine)

“…The most improvised, effortless stand-up show I’ve ever seen” (Connecting Wellington NZ Fringe)

KATHERINE KENWAY (@Katherway)
Hackney Empire New Act of the Year Finalist 2020

Katherine Kenway is a regular on the comedy circuit, delighting audiences with her jokes on being a lazy mum. She has a sardonic view on life and is like your slightly scary straight-talking best friend, but with punchlines.

“…a comedian so deadpan she makes Jack Dee look like Timmy Mallett.” (Steve Bennett, Chortle)

“…an acerbic wit with a sideways view of motherhood.” (Funny Women)

JOSEPH EMSLIE (@josephemslie)
Laughing Horse New Act Of The Year Final 2018
Runner Up Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year 2023
Amused Moose Comedy’s National New Comic Final 2017
So You Think You’re Funny Semi-Final 2017

Joseph is the number one go to gluten free comic on the circuit. During the pandemic Joseph took the opportunity to start, and grow, his TikTok account to over 15,000 followers, well over 1 million views and just shy of half a million likes on all his videos combined. He also co-hosts a comedy podcast called BillyJoeMates which takes comedians back to school to re-sit a subject of their choosing.

“Definitely a name to keep tabs on.” (Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke)

“Radiating comic innocence and making great play on his schoolboy looks” (Chortle)

WINTER FOENANDER
Comedian/Podcaster
Winter has performed in many locations around the world. As well as a hectic touring schedule he is writing his first a Radio & TV sit-coms. An energetic, likeable and interactive comedian whose comedy is surreal, silly dark and sometimes wholly improvised.

‘Well Weaved Jokes’ (Bunbury Magazine)

‘ Bloody Funny’ (Mark Dolan, Balls of Steel)

DANIEL RUIZ TIZON (@1607WestEgg)
Comedian/Writer who has been commissioned to write for TV/Film/0Radio
Daniel is also the mastermind of Radio shows (The Letter) and podcast (Daniel Ruiz Tizon is available)

‘Darkly comic’ – (Vogue Italia)

‘An oddball pleasure’ – (The Observer)

Mc SAJEELA KERSHI (@SajeelaKershi)
Multi award winning International comedian/writer/broadcaster
‘Smart Funny With a mischievous glint’ (Times)

‘Magnetic loveable and extremely witty’ (The Spectator)

‘Hugely talented, extremely funny, divine diva (Time Out)

You can also add your attendance on our facebook events page. COMEDY COTTAGE – FRI 23rd FEB – with CHRISTIAN REILLY | Facebook

NB: Feel free to also book March 29th Show

Which has in the past always been hosted by the late great Annabel Giles for Comic Relief – she generously hosted our March show’s from when the club first started. Given this remarkable lady was such a great friend to the Cottage and she so generously helped us raise funds for the club charities with her annual ‘Annabel’s Rubbish Raffle‘ we thought it would be fitting tribute to donate this March’s show profits to her charities that helped her.

Martlets Home – Martlets the hospice that helped her towards the end and AMAZE For families with disabled children and young people in Sussex – Amaze (amazesussex.org.uk) that helped her and her dear son Tedd.

Some of you will remember her son Tedd who she often bought down to the gigs both mother and son loved being part of the Cottage and loved you our beautiful audience. So much so that she via her family requested that there be representation from the Cottagers at the funeral at the end of last year.

We have invited Tedd to come and do one last ‘Annabel’s Rubbish Raffle’ although he has put his own spin on it and called it the ‘RubbRaff’.

Please help us sell this show out in aid of these wonderful two charities.

A Fabulous line-up with Simon Donald (creator of Viz), Suzy Bennett (Winner of Funny Women), Nat Tapley (Bafta winner) and more tbc.

Hope to see you wonderful people at the next two show.

Big Love

Team Angels

Croydon Folk & Blues Club @ Cedar Hall, Ruskin House
Feb 25 @ 8:00 pm
The Croydon Folk and Blues Club meets every Sunday evening from 8:00 at Ruskin House, 23 Coombe Road, Croydon, Surrey (see how to find us). Everyone is welcome – not just musicians, and those of all abilities are encouraged to “have a go” if they want to – it doesn’t have to be folk OR blues either! Originals or covers are all welcome. The music starts around 8:30 with the regular sessions. An hour later there is usually a ‘hotspot’ which features a special guest. After the hotspot it’s back to the regular session and the evening usually ends featuring club organiser Garry Davis and his harmonica with other musicians and singers. It is a very friendly, relaxed and supportive atmosphere and only costs £2, which also enters you into the fabulous end-of-evening prize draw. Real ale and a wide range of drinks are also available from the main bar till 10:45. Ruskin House also hosts Croydon Folk Song Club on Mondays.

If you would like to play at Ruskin House on a Sunday, prepare about five numbers and make yourself known to Garry when you arrive. If it’s busy and you’re at the end of the line, you may not get on till late. We don’t generally use amplification, even for vocals, because unless you’re using a keyboard or MIDI device, electric bass or guitar, we find that unplugged is plenty loud enough. This can be quite a challenge for those used to being miked up! The adjacent Cedar Room, which we use for large-scale events, has full PA facilities (and a bar). In the summer we often have a bar-b-que on the huge patio.
